Shaping the Modern Eye: Art from the 19th Century to Today
PRESENTED BY: Ana Johnson-Moore
|
This class offers an engaging overview of modern art history, tracing its evolution from the mid-19th century to the present day. We will begin with the birth of modernism in Impressionism and Expressionism, then move into the radical innovations of Abstract Expressionism and the avant-garde, before exploring contemporary movements such as conceptual practices, installation, and mixed media.
Together, we will study the defining characteristics of these artistic currents, the lives and works of their most notable painters, and the aesthetic and philosophical principles that shaped their emergence. From Monet and Van Gogh to Pollock, Duchamp, and contemporary experimental artists, the course will highlight how each movement challenged conventions and redefined what art could be. By the end of this course, students will gain a deeper understanding of how modern and 12contemporary art reflect broader cultural, social, and intellectual transformations—and how these movements continue to influence the way we see and create today.
