This introductory course develops drawing skills through experimentation with a broad range of drawing tools and techniques. Art concepts explored throughout the course include line, shape, value, texture, space and composition. Class format will be an introduction to a project with a visual presentation or a demonstration, or a combination of both, followed by hands-on practice with a particular subject, topic, and/or medium. While the focus will be on learning to draw from observation, you will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials and ways of working as a means of finding your own style and form of expression. Art mediums used include graphite pencils, charcoal, conte, and ink.
Pad of newsprint paper (18x24)
Heavy weight drawing paper - can be purchased by sheet or in a pad (no smaller than 14x17)
Graphite Pencils 3-4 These come in different degrees of hardness/softness (B = soft, H = hard) Try a range to see what works best for you.
Kneaded Rubber Eraser
White eraser (Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser)
Vine charcoal (small pack)
Compressed charcoal sticks (3-4 sticks)
White Conte Crayon (1-2 sticks)
Black Ink pen
If unsure of any materials needed, samples will be available at the first class and materials discussed.
Instructor: Ms. Donna Rockwell
A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Illustration, Donna has worked as a designer, illustrator and fine artist for 20+ years. Teaching experience includes instruction in both computer and traditional art methods at Arlington Catholic High School and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Additionally, she has provided instruction assistance at the University of Colorado in printmaking. She can be found creating art of all kinds at her Do Well Studio in Sandwich, MA.
