Nestled in the Sandwich Glass Factory village near the Sandwich Boardwalk are two hidden gardens, one at 20 Church Street and the other at 12 State Street. Twenty Church Street had been quietly forgotten until the present owners sparked it into life. They transformed the land into gardens filled with sun and shade plantings to create intimate areas and unexpected moments. A secret pathway leads quietly through a gate to State Street. Twelve State Street had been deserted for 30 years until the present owners bought it. They created a garden, secret from the road, with a 60-foot perennial border. Unique shrubs, tuberous begonias started from tubers each spring, and abundant flowers create areas of privacy and joy. The two families, who are related, share plantings and advice, curiosity, and creativity.

Hydrangeas are the heart of the garden with over 30 varieties woven throughout the landscape.
These include Hydrangea arborescens (Annabelle), macrophylla (Bigleaf), paniculata (Limelight), and quercifolia (Oakleaf), creating a tapestry of blooms from early summer through fall.
The property unfolds into a series of distinct garden “rooms,” each with its own character, complemented by numerous containers filled with seasonal plantings. On the east side of the home, a vegetable garden provides a more practical—and delicious—dimension to the space. Like all gardens, this one is a work in progress—ever changing, ever evolving.

The Meadow House
22 Quaker Road, Sandwich
Sun., July 19, 10 am - 4 pm

An 11-acre property in East Sandwich presents a thoughtful reimagining of a 300-year-old farming tradition, blending active enjoyment with a deep commitment to ecological stewardship.Through a process of rewilding, Bernice and Joe Wahler have replaced mown lawns and non-native pastures with a vibrant meadowscape that serves as both a vital pollinator habitat and a protective buffer for a natural spring and wetland system. The property harmonizes natural beauty with the daily rhythms of a productive organic farm and greenhouse managed by resident farmer Shane Chambers.

Visitors will experience an inspired manifesto for land use, where native plants and dense wildlife corridors prove that cultural heritage and the humming complexity of a living ecosystem can coexist beautifully.
