I have been doing geometric drawings and all types of handiwork most of my life. My work has been called "bold geometrics using lots of color." I like to think of myself as a contemporary traditionalist because I base my work on traditional quilt blocks and other traditional designs such as Chinese lattices, Mariner's compasses, and bargello designs, but by using batik and metallic fabrics, symmetry border prints, and techniques such as fussy-cutting, my work has a contemporary feel.

Mary's journey in the decorative painting field began in 1982. As a young mother with a new home, I became aware of decorative painted pieces and wondered just how it was done. Initially my studies in decorative painting were self-taught with the aid of a couple of books and in the oil medium. Later, I took formal classes in acrylics. In 1983 I joined the Society of Decorative Painters and have since earned a CDA (Certified Decorative Artist),and Master Stroke and Master Floral categories of the MDA ( Master Decorative Artist).
The Tole Sampler is the name of my home studio from which I have been teaching decorative painting for 30 years. I have taught at numerous conventions including SDP. HOOT, and NET. In more recent years I have been designing and marketing pattern packets in both acrylics and oils. I was the design artist for New England Traditions (NET) in 2000,completed my first book, "A New England Tole Sampler" in 2002, and had an ornament selected for the White House in 2004. I was born and raised in Massachusetts. My husband, Rick, and I have rasied two sons and a few pets along the way. After residing 25 years in Westford, Rick and I recently sold our home and moved into our new home in Cotuit, MA on Cape Cod. Of course the studio came along too. For me decorative painting has and will continue to enrich my life with challenges, growth, friendships and enjoyment. I look forward to teaching, designing, and being inspired in this new location. When I am not painting or busy with the family, you might find me in my gardens. You can write to me at 34 Dovetail Lane, Cotuit, MA 02635 or e-mail me at Mary@Tolesampler.com.

"Photography: Waterways, Lights & Headlands" presented by Karen E. McDevitt for Adults
The workshop will begin at 7 am in Sandwich, MA on the (Cape side) at the east end of the canal to photograph the entrance breakwaters, possible mariner traffic and wildlife. We will stay in the area long enough to meet, gather and snap a few images. We will then plan to leave this location to stop at the nearby meandering estuary, and boardwalk to one of Sandwich’s beloved beaches, Town Neck Beach. You will have an opportunity to explore this area and compose and take some images here. Leaving for Eastham at 8:30 we will meet as a group at 10 am in the parking lot of the Salt Pond’s Visitors Center.
Here we will focus on the tidal basic, cedar woods, and briefly on the trails before heading to Coast Guard Beach and the Great Salt Marsh. This area has a lot to see and experience. As a group we will devote time to compose images and photograph the essence of nature in this beautiful setting. Here we will have the beach, cedar woods, boardwalk, Coast Guard House, the bathing house, dunes and marsh. There may be many other photo ops with wild life, recreational fishermen, sea life and tidal debris. I would aim to have almost a full hour in each location, Salt Pond and then the outer beach.
I would like to direct the group to depart from Coast Guard Beach around noon with an option to break for lunch no later than 1:30 at Highland Lighthouse. In between we will drive along the shore road to Nauset Beach, Nauset Light and the Three Sisters Lighthouses. The group will help to set the pace, so it is advisable that you pack a snack and water in case the need arises. Lunch no later than 1:30 @ Highland Lighthouse.

Instructor: Ms. Gail Scannell Expressing myself creatively has been a joy to me all my life, but I was in my fifties when I first started with Folk Art. I soon took other classes and workshops on acrylic, watercolor, collage, and mixed media, with a little sumie and sculpture. These genres, which I sometimes use together, have brought me bliss. The Sandwich Art Alliance has been a great experience, both for friendship and stimulus from the work of fine artists. I am thankful for SAA giving me a chance to show my work.

Instructor: Ms. Hannah Hilliard-Bouvier
Hannah Hilliard-Bouvier sees art and life in the sand between her toes. A native of Martha’s Vineyard who now calls Sandwich... home, Hannah is inspired by the magic of nature, the innocence of childhood, and the siren song of the sea to create her whimsical works of art.
While growing up on the Vineyard, Hannah was surrounded by artists at her mother’s GE Hilliard Galleries in Chilmark and Edgartown. Art was so much a part of her existence that as a child, Hannah thought everyone grew up to be artists. While other children her age were at the playground , Hannah was in the studios of artists experiencing art making.
Throughout her life, Hannah has continued to surround herself with those who view art as fundamental to the human experience. She has worked in galleries and museums, has studied with talented educators like sculptor Heather Blume, and finds herself at home in the company of those who love to create. She has been inspired by the works of Ralph and Martha Cahoon and Edward Gory.
Hannah works with a variety of media to create her original pieces, including pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. Her Trees of Life series, which emerged in 2010, is a celebration of Cape Cod’s history, a love song to the ocean, and a prayer of thanks for the beauty Hannah finds herself surrounded by every day.

Instructor: Carolyn LeComte
Ever since she could hold a crayon, Carolyn LeComte has been dedicated to painting, drawing, and writing. She majored in art in college, with a minor in American Literature, and graduated from Douglass College (of Rutgers University) with a degree in Liberal Arts. She became a medical artist upon graduation, and continued free-lancing through the later years when she was a stay-at-home mom. She eventually landed a job in the art department at General Electric, which over time became General Dynamics, and learned the more technical side of illustration.
While primarily an oil-painter, in the last year or so Carolyn has discovered the wonderful art of scratchboard and has dedicated much of her time to experimenting and perfecting technique. She is currently working on a series of anonymous portraits, which she calls “Scratched Faces” and hopes to exhibit them all together in one venue sometime soon.
Carolyn is also a published author, referring to her dual callings as “two sides of her creative coin.”
