“Pastels” presented by Betsy Payne Cook, PPSCCThis is an ideal class for artists who paint with pastels and would like to expand their use of this versatile medium. It is also suitable for artists who are new to pastels and would like to explore painting with pastels.
Each class will begin with an introductory lesson and allow for plenty of easel time with individual feedback. Instruction will include pastel techniques with hard and soft pastels, under paintings techniques and the principles of composition & color. Beginner & Intermediate. Materials List:

![]() Betsy Payne Cook paints exclusively with pastels, and is honored to be a juried artist member of the PastelSociety of America and to have achieved signature membership of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod (PPSCC). Betsy is acknowledged as a juried Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Center. Betsy is represented by True Grit Gallery in Middleboro,MA. She a frequent guest exhibitor at Woodruffs Art Center, Mashpee, MA. Betsy paints in her home studio and en plein air wherever her travels take her. Betsy records her thoughts and experiences as an artist in her e-newsletter and blog “Painting In and Out”. Her hope is to provide inspiration and insight while sharing her love of pastels and her life as a plein air and studio artist. She was invited to be a demonstrator for the 2018 “Mastering Your Mark” Art Conference held in Hyannis, MA. Betsy is delighted to be an art mentor for the ArtWorks program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in art. She teaches pastel workshops and classes, and is on the faculty of the Falmouth Arts Center ,the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and Sandwich Arts Alliance. Betsy organizes Cape Cod plein air classes and workshops including destination plein air painting workshops. In 2017 she led a group of artists to Cardiff, Wales Great Britain for a week of painting and exploring. Betsy has partnered with tour guide and her next adventure is to offer an artist’s retreat to Italy in 2020. Betsy’s pastel paintings have been exhibited in many competitive local and national juried exhibitions, having won numerous awards. A selection of her paintings from her series “The View Below- allegorical seascapes” are in an invitational exhibit at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum through September 3, 2019. A selection of her plein air paintings will be at the True Grit Gallery in September 2019 for her feature artist show “Journeys: en Plein Air and Studio Paintings”. In 2017 & 2018, her collection “Traversing the Atlantic: Travels with my Pastels” rotated through local venues. In addition, Betsy paints for her series of “Nocturnes: Dusk to Night “ Betsy attended the College of St. Rose in her home town of Albany, N.Y, earning a B.S. Art Education & a M.S. Special Education. Her career as an educator and administrator ended in 2015 when she decided to pursue her art. Cape Cod was always a family favorite for a week’s vacation, or a weekend; and she made it her home in 1994 when she returned to the states after living in a small village in Wales, Great Britain for nine years.
