Howard Johnson was born in Wollaston, MA, and served in World War I. In 1925, with a loan of $2,500, he purchased a drug store and soda fountain where he had been working, thus began his restaurant chain across the U.S. He is known as the “Father of the franchise industry,” the man who revolutionized the restaurant industry in the U.S. His story is fascinating, told with historical accuracy and brilliantly illustrated with photographs, nostalgic for adults and perhaps also of interest to high school students interested in development of business franchises.
