Plein Air Sandwich - Friday, July 12, 2019 'Master of the Sea' by Betsy Payne Cook
Artists from across the Cape and beyond will be setting up easels along the streets and byways of Sandwich to paint or draw their favorite scene and to share the experience with the public. 'Plein Air Sandwich', a third annual event sponsored by Sandwich Arts Alliance, takes place on Friday, July 12th from 8 am to 1 pm, where artists will be painting or sketching 'en plein air' (outside) at a location in town of their own choosing. To help the public find and identify the artists, they’ll be wearing special orange hats.
“Painting outdoors is an exhilarating experience, whether you are a novice or an experienced painter”, says Betsy Payne Cook, event painter. “The quality of the work should be very high based on the artists waiting to sign up”, explains event manager Denise Chasse, who added, “This is a perfect event for the Sandwich Arts Alliance to undertake because it brings art into the community and showcases the talent locally.” That evening from 5-7 pm, a reception and silent auction will be held at The Sagamore Inn Restaurant, 1131 Sagamore Rd, Sagamore, where the public is invited to view the finished artwork, meet the artists, and bid on their favorite pieces. The entire day is meant to be casual and fun. |

Plein Air Sandwich is a non-juried plein air (Outside Landscape) painting event sponsored by the Sandwich Arts Alliance. The event starts with up to six hours of plein air painting at the artists’ location of choice within the Town of Sandwich. Artists must return their finished work to the Sagamore Inn, 1131 Sandwich Rd, Sagamore, MA 02561, by 2:30 p.m. That evening, entries will be judged with prizes awarded during the Cocktail Hour Show and Silent Auction. All paintings will be for sale and displayed on panels or on the artists’ own easels.

Guidelines:
- Plein Air participants are responsible for providing their own easels, if needed, and all materials.
- The maximum size of the finished artwork is 30”x30” including the frame if one is used (framing is optional).
- Artists must be fully registered in order to participate.
- The artist’s canvas and/or paper will be officially stamped on the back at check-in between 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m., July 12 at the Alliance Art Center, 124 Route 6A Sandwich, MA 02563
- Artists may have more than one paper/canvas stamped. At least one painting per participant will be shown.
- All paintings must be completed en plein air on July 12, 2019 in Sandwich without the use of photographs.
- Anything stretched must have wire or means to hang.
- All work in the show must be for sale in the Silent Auction. Artists shall indicate a bid starting price.
- Awards for 1st and 2nd will be awarded the evening of event.
- The artwork will remain on display during the event on July 12th. All unsold work must be removed at the end of the event, but no sooner than 7 p.m.
- The Sandwich Arts Alliance will handle all sales retaining a 30% commission. Checks will be sent out within three weeks.
- This event will be held rain or shine.
