The Bruce Abbott/Fred Fried Quintet

In “A Jazz Salute to Broadway”, four of the Cape’s favorite jazz musicians, along with renowned vocalist Marcelle Gauvin, bring a program combining two original American musical genres – jazz and musical theater. Expect to hear such hits as “Give My Regards to Broadway”, as well as much-loved songs from Porgy and Bess, West Side Story, The Wiz, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, and other musicals.

BRUCE ABBOTT – Saxophone & Flute Bruce Abbott (saxophone & flute) studied at Berklee College of Music where he was a student of Andy McGhee. He has served on the faculties of Nauset Regional High School, Salve Regina University and the University of Rhode Island, where he also earned a Masters Degree in Music Performance. Bruce has appeared at events, concerts and in clubs throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and has toured with the Artie Shaw Orchestra under the direction of Dick Johnson. Bruce is an active recording artist and has released over a dozen CDs for North Star Records. He conducts clinics & workshops throughout New England and teaches private music instruction on Cape Cod. FRED FRIED - Guitar
Originally from New York City, 8-string guitarist Fred Fried has appeared in New York, Los Angeles, Europe and New England with such artists as Art Pepper, Howard Alden, Michael Moore, Jay Leonhart, and Barbara Cook. In New York, Fried was featured in steady engagements at the World Trade Center (Windows on the World) and at the Rainbow Room and as a solo artist at the Greenwich Village Jazz Festival and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. On Cape Cod his collaboration with saxophonist Bruce Abbott has become one of the leading jazz duos in New England. He has opened, solo guitar, for Diana Krall and Chris Botti at the Cape Cod Melody Tent and South Shore Music Circus. Fred recently released his fourteenth CD as leader Core Four and More. MARCELLE GAUVIN -Vocalist
Marcelle Gauvin is a world-renowned vocal technician and educator. She is sought out across the United States and internationally to give private and master classes to vocalists and voice educators alike. Marcelle is currently functioning as the head of the Jazz Voice studio at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She is also an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and on the faculty at Shenandoah University’s Contemporary Commercial Music Institute. Marcelle Gauvin was born in Woonsocket, RI and began her performance career in the world of theater but left to pursue her true passion: jazz. "Jazz is a passion. I create because I have to and love to. Without that, my life force simply diminishes.” With this determined attitude, Marcelle released her debut CD Faces of Love in 1999. She began to play at jazz festivals and clubs throughout the US, building an enthusiastic audience of life-long admirers. MIKI MATSUKI – Drums/Percussion
Drummer Miki Matsuki was born in Matsuyama, Japan. She moved to the United States to study jazz at the Berklee College of Music in 1996. Since graduating from Berklee, she has performed and recorded in various musical settings including soundtrack work, performances at radio and television broadcasting stations, a tour of Korea, as well as numerous clubs and concert halls throughout the Northeast. Ms. Matsuki has performed with great musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Joanne Brackeen, George Garzone, John Tchicai, Darren Barrett, Dave Bryant, Stan Strickland and many others. Ms. Matsuki received her MM and GPD in Modern American Music Performance from the Longy School of Music with full scholarship. |
MICHAEL LAVOIE - Bass
Mike, a New Bedford resident, has enjoyed a wide variety of recorded and live performances. His natural skill in various styles of music, on acoustic as well as four and six-string bass has made him a sought-after session/studio musician, freelance bassist and private instructor. Mike has performed with Bob Guilotti, Wynton Marsalis, Steven Tyler, Jeff Galindo, Leo Genovese, Bill Jones, David Mitton, John Harrison and many other great artists and brings a superb level of musicianship to every engagement. As an active educator he has been involved with the Berklee School of Music’s “Summer Guitar Sessions” and numerous clinics on the high school and college level. His general knowledge in his field has led to contributions on articles for publication and on instrument manufacturing. |
