“Plein-air” watercolor painting has given Mary the habit of keeping an extensive collection of  field sketchbooks, a constant source of inspiration and a record of work that goes back more  than 30 years. Working in all kinds of weather forced her to sketch compositions quickly and  then to paint fast. The paintings show a deft hand and confident brushwork. Later studio work  gave her the confidence to expand her palette. Some of her smaller paintings are done as  sketches for larger work, but often enough end up standing on their own. 
ABOUT MARY SMITH

​Mary is a Gallery Artist at South Shore Art Center, a juried artist at the Cape Cod Art Center, is  a member of the Copley Society since 1975 and a New England Watercolor Society Signature  Member. She has participated in a number of local and national shows over the years and won  numerous awards. 2021 shows include several national shows at the Cape Cod Art Center, the  Rhode Island Watercolor Society National Show, the NEWS Regional Show and the Guild of  Boston Artists Regional show. Local shows include the Sandwich Arts Alliance and Highfield  Hall.
